• Sports Update: PIL Honors Athletes in Fall Sports on All-League Teams

    With winter sports getting under way, the Portland Interscholastic League put a wrap on the fall season by announcing its all-league teams and awards. The all-PIL teams were chosen by a ballot of the league’s coaches.

    Here are the award winners, notes and links to the full teams:

    Girls Soccer

    • Player of the Year: Elle Frazier, Grant
    • Co-Coach of the Year: Emmanuil Tjuanakis, Grant
    • Co-Coach of the Year: Douglas Diller, Cleveland
    • Notable: Grant, which won the first state championship in program history as well as the league title, placed three players on the all-league first team with Frazier, a senior forward, joined by junior midfielder Liv Frazier and senior midfielder Caprial Loescher.

    Boys Soccer

    • Co-Offensive Player of the Year: Seb Buscaglia, Cleveland
    • Co-Offensive Player of the Year: Darren Green, Franklin
    • Defensive Player of the Year: Sebastian Rangel, Grant
    • Coach of the Year: Erik Miller, Grant
    • Notable: Grant, which won the league title and reached the state semifinals, had three first-team picks. Rangel, a senior defender, was joined by senior midfielder Mitchel Munzing and senior goalkeeper Spencer Brown.

    Football

    • Offensive Player of the Year: Imarion Kelly, Roosevelt
    • Co-Defensive Player of the Year: Max von Arx, Grant
    • Co-Defensive Player of the Year: Jeremiah Matthews, Jefferson
    • Coach of the Year: Ryan McCants, Roosevelt
    • Notable: Grant and Roosevelt shared the PIL title and played one of the season’s most dramatic games on Oct. 15, with Grant winning 42-41 after two overtimes.

     Volleyball

    • Player of the Year: Avery Fraser, Ida B. Wells
    • Co-Coach of the Year: Sydney Hammond, Cleveland
    • Co-Coach of the Year: Kyla Henry, McDaniel
    • Notable: Ida B. Wells and Grant shared the league title after splitting their season series. Both placed two players on the all-league first team, with Fraser joined by her fellow Ida B. Wells senior Aly Wright, and seniors Libby Robbins and Maci Dahl representing Grant.
