After School Enrichment (ASE): Series of after school classes and activities offered at a fee throughout the year.

    Blast: Weekly email newsletter usually sent on Sundays. Superb way to stay informed.

    Boom: Email that can be sent at any time with time-sensitive information that cannot wait for the next Blast.

    ASCO (All-School Camp Out): Annual all-school camping trip. Limited spots are available. Registration and payment required. Happens late spring.

    Camp Fire: Camp Fire Columbia a non-profit organization providing quality onsite before and aftercare. campfirecolumbia.org.

    Constructivism: CSS is founded on a constructivist educational philosophy developed by renowned Swiss psychologist Jean Piaget. After years of observing children, Piaget found that they learn best when they explore and discover on their own, constructing their knowledge through hands-on experiences and problem-solving.

    Creative Arts Run (CAR): All-school event each fall in which students run laps to raise money specifically for art programs in the current school year.

    Fifty-Cent Friday: PTA popcorn stand in the hallway on Fridays after school. Popcorn made with coconut oil only is fifty cents per bag, and proceeds go to the PTA.

    FUNraiser: Adult-only community-building evening of food, drinks, games, and auction items. Relaxed, casual, and very fun. The biggest fundraiser of the year.

    IEP: Individualized Education Plan. A plan or program developed to ensure that a child who has a disability identified under the law and is attending an elementary or secondary educational institution receives specialized instruction and related services.

    Konstella: Communication platform for classes, committees, social groups, and more. It also contains the CSS calendar. See Get Connected to sign up.

    Leadership: Group of mid-level students that plans spirit activities throughout the year.

    Mid-level: Grades 6-8

    Mid-Level Blast: Bi-weekly email that contains information pertinent to mid-level families only. Mid-level is grades 6-8, and only those families are subscribed to this list.

    Montavillage Festival: Free, annual event that brings together the CSS community, local vendors, business associations, youth groups, and the entire Montavilla neighborhood.

    Parent Coffee: Semi-regular social event, usually after drop off time, during which parents get together to chat and have coffee/tea.

    Parent-Teacher Association (PTA): The goal of the PTA at CSS is to support and excellent education for our kids. Committed to unifying our school around constructivism and storyline, supporting the needs of every student, and listening to all ideas and concerns. You can participate in a meeting or be part of the leadership/board. Monthly meetings and multiple ways to be involved.

    Site Council: A group of teachers, parents, and staff who develop, review, and evaluate school improvement programs and budgets. The parent members are elected by their peers.

    Storyline: Storyline is a structured approach to learning and teaching that was developed in Scotland. It builds on the key principle that learning, to be meaningful, has to be memorable and that by using a learner’s enthusiasm for story-making, the classroom, the teacher’s role, and learning can be transformed. Storyline is a strategy for developing the curriculum as an integrated whole. It provides an opportunity for active learning and reflection as essential parts of effective learning and teaching. At the same time, it develops in learners a powerful sense of ownership of their learning.

    Talented and Gifted (TAG): A broad term for special practices, procedures, and theories used in the education of children who have been identified as able to demonstrate outstanding aptitude or competence in one or more domains

    Room Leads (formerly Class Reps): Parent volunteers who act as liaisons among teachers, their class, and the PTA.
