  • This Giving Tuesday

    Good morning, Hayhurst Families!

We would be honored if you would consider a donation to the Hayhurst Foundation on this "Giving Tuesday." Although Hayhurst qualifies for schoolwide free lunch under the Community Eligibility Provision, we do not receive Title IA funding. This means that, while many Hayhurst students contribute to district funding numbers, we do not receive the financial benefits. Title IA funds are meant to “supplement” services at the school—supplemental services include art instruction, reading coaches, teacher’s assistants, social work, and mental health support, to name a few. The Hayhurst Foundation is a core tool that the Hayhurst Community has to close this gap between what our students need and what they are awarded via state and federal funding.

If you have the ability to do so, please see the attached flyer for information on how to donate or visit www.hayhurstfoundation.org/donate

Thank you, everyone, for all your support, in all its many forms! We are grateful for you!

  • PTA Clothing Closet

Check out the Portland PTA Clothing Closet!

Every year, as part of the Portland Council of the PTA, Hayhurst gets to staff the district Clothing Closet. Our first chance is coming up on Thursday, December 7th and the PTA need 5-6 volunteers for any duration of time between 9:30am and 1:30pm. This "closet" (it's huge) and the good work that happens there are a sight to see. Any time a PPS staffer needs to help a kid or family get shoes, a warm coat, even a whole new wardrobe, they can contact the team at the Clothing Closet. Volunteers help visiting families shop the closet or pull orders sent in from schools across the district. It's fun and impactful, and a way to help families in need during the holiday season. If you are interested, reach out to Deirdre at president@hayhurstpta.org.

  • Welcome to the Elizabeth Hayhurst School! We're glad you're here!

    Hello!

My name is DC Re-Bloom.  I have the distinct honor of serving as principal at the Elizabeth Hayhurst School, located on the ancestral home of the Atfalati band of the Kalapuya people, in SW Portland. Our community works relentlessly to uphold the memory of our namesake: the first president of the Oregon Parent Teacher Association in the early 1900’s.  With her work as our guideposts, we put community at the center of everything we do.  We know, beyond a doubt, that when educators, students, families, and neighborhoods come together, true equitable and democratic societies flourish and all students achieve at high levels.

Please take a moment to peruse our weekly newsletter, The Hayhurst Husky Howl, and our brand new website.  And, if there's ever anything you need, please reach out: 503-916-6300.  Or email me at drebloom@pps.net.

    In service,

    DC

Last spring, when Portland Public Schools moved to ensure that every middle school in the district had an active advisory program, the focus was on relationship building and giving students and teachers the tools needed to nurture a sense of belonging.

The goals for the advisory programs were clear. What the district had yet to arrive at was a curriculum that would help everyone achieve those goals.

Harrison Park, which transitioned from a K-8 to a middle school this fall, recently held a school-wide vote for a new mascot. According to Principal Leah Dickey, these first few months as a middle school have been pivotal for students as they navigate the new exciting normal and establish an identity as a school and community. Picking a mascot has been an important part of that journey.

Principal Phu Dao is many things to the students and staff of Roseway Heights Middle School: mentor, role model, champion, friend. Ask anyone who has learned from and worked with him and they will tell you that he has dedicated his entire career to advocating for students, families, and educators. And now he’s being honored for that dedication.

Courageous Conversation, a Washington, D.C.-based non-profit that works with individuals and institutions to address racial disparities through sustained, fruitful dialogue, has named Principal Dao this year’s recipient of the Dr. Charles Hopson Racial Equity Principal Leadership Award.
