Hello, こんにちは, Kon'nichiwa Dear Richmond Community,

One more week of school before Winter Break, and we miss you already : )
While you are away from campus we hope that you will stay safe in all the ways and enjoy a restful and restorative time with loved ones. We continue to feel awed and thankful for the many layers of community support so generously offered to the school and one another. The collective trauma of this ongoing pandemic is an especially challenging context in which to experience and process incidents of violence and upsetting information coming at us from across the globe, country, city, and street. At school, we use all of our behavioral, emotional, and physical supports and tools to help our students feel and stay safe in our learning community. I’m sure that families are wrapping around our kiddos at home as well. If you’re looking for tips and other resources for talking to your children about what’s in the news you might consider this post from Common Sense Media and their rich cache of options for families
. We are, as always, grateful too for the resource sharing by the PTA, below, through Konstella, and in the Richmond Equity Space.

    THANK YOU, ありがとうございます, Arigatōgozaimasu!

    PTA

In response to last week’s terrifying attack on one of Richmond’s parents and students while awaiting the bus to school, many of our community members have reached out wanting to help and support. On behalf of the family we would like to share their deepest gratitude for the outpouring of emotional support they have received. They are working closely with PPS and school staff while processing the incident.

Racist attacks such as these can be triggering, especially when so close to home. The PTA would like to offer some resources we hope you find helpful. These resources are intended to support Asian mental health, help folks talk to kids about racism and more.

Also, Fumiyo Nishimoto, a Japanese counselor who regularly works with Asian families in Portland, and who attended the Japanese affinity space during the Equity Group’s event last Spring has a website that can be explored here.

Thank you to all who participated in the 12/7 event for Cultivating Omoiyari: Identifying and Overcoming Implicit Bias.
