From the PrincipalI am so excited to meet you all tomorrow at the Back to School Night event. Here is some great news! We will have a staff addition starting next week starting October 6, 2022. Please welcome our new full time counselor, Madelyn Spain who will join Candor in supporting our students.
Madelyn (Matty) Spain comes to Richmond with nearly two decades of experience working with youth and families as a counselor and educator. She has spent the last 4 years serving high school students at Pioneer School and is excited to return to where she began her journey in elementary education. During her free time, Matty loves to hike, play music, travel and spend time with family and friends. Matty and her husband have two daughters, ages 7 and 9, who attend Mandarin Immersion in Portland Public Schools. She also has a grumpy 12-year-old kitty and an energetic 4-month-old puppy. She is looking forward to meeting everyone and excited to join the Richmond Community. Welcome Madelyn!
Continuing with promoting our support staff, it is my pleasure to write about Dan Alexander, who has been our awesome Richmond head custodian for the last 15 years. Dan has kept our school clean and safe during the most difficult times such as during the COVID pandemic. I am trying to write about Dan but I believe his own words are much more powerful: “During my time at Richmond I have turned down so many promotions. I never wanted to leave our school. We have always had a great staff, and I love the fact that parents are really involved in school functions. What I love the most are the kids. I get to watch them grow and I love helping them any way I can from tying shoes to getting the ball off the roof, or opening a tough container at lunch time. I have had past students who are now in middle and high schools, even college students come up to me and call me by my name and ask me how I have been. Just to know that they remember my name makes me feel like maybe I made some kind of impression on them while they were at Richmond.” Thank you Dan!
See you tomorrow at Back to School Night!

We are happy to be back in person for this year’s event. The evening will officially start for all Richmond families at 6:00 PM, with main doors open at 5:55. Our Richmond students (and any siblings) are welcome and encouraged to attend with you. We ask that you please stay together as a family and accompany your student throughout the evening while they are in the building.Grade Level Presentations
The program will include a twenty minute grade level presentation in which grade teaching teams will share information about the curriculum and their teaching practices. These presentations will include all families within each grade level and will rotate through the grades starting with the youngest grades and finishing the evening with the older grades.Kindergarten families met earlier in the school year to learn this same information from teachers, so while they won’t have a grade level presentation, they are highly encouraged to attend, meet the teachers, visit the classrooms and learn more about the school. Each presentation is in the cafeteria and lasts 20 minutes.

Bulldog Scavenger Hunt
When families are not at their grade level presentation, they will have an opportunity to travel throughout the school completing our Bulldog Scavenger Hunt from 6-8 PM. Pick up the activity sheet when you come in the front door next to the main office. Our School Administrative Assistant, Karen, will be at the Office Table handing them out. Participation in the scavenger hunt will allow you to see all parts of our wonderful school, meet our fantastic specialist teachers, and learn more about our three Richmond family organizations (PTA, Foundation, and Oya No Kai). This will also be a time to stop by your student’s classrooms (English & Japanese) for a brief and informal greeting with teachers and so your student can show you around the space and highlight for you what they’ve been learning so far. Our teachers may have some additional information for you to take and volunteer opportunities for which you can sign up. The goal is for students to share and show-off their school experience with their families. We do hope that this Back to School Night format supports the busy and complex lives of our families while offering a clear picture of the total student experience at Richmond!
TAG Talk Richmond's Family TAG Night will be held at 5:30 pm this Thursday, September 29th before Back to School Night starts at 6 pm (main doors will open at 5:25 PM for attendees). All families are welcome to join this general informational session from the PPS Talented and Gifted Department.
