My name is Richard Smith and I am the new principal of Kellogg Middle School. I am so excited to be able to work with each of you and your students. Next year will be my 9th year as a middle school administrator. I speak/write/understand both English and Spanish. This is truly a unique and exciting opportunity that we have to build a new school together that will serve students from five different communities. So much work has already been done and there is still much to do. I know that together we will build a school and a program that will work for you and your children.
We will be hosting three community informational meetings about Kellogg in May. These will all be done via Zoom. The first will be on May 11th at 6 p.m. and will be in English. The second will be on May 12th at 6 p.m. in Spanish and the third on May 13th at 6 p.m. in Vietnamese. The links and information to join are at the bottom of this message.
I look forward to meeting many of you and to share information about this new and exciting school! If you have any questions, please reach out to me at email@example.com.

April 27, 2021, 4-5 pm
April 30, 2021, 8:30-9:30 am
It’s been a year unlike any we have experienced before and from the beginning we have been grateful to be in it together with you, our amazing Marysville families. Understanding how you and your students are doing at school is an important part of us being able to do our job well. Each year we look forward to the chance to hear from you about your experiences through the Successful Schools Survey.
What is the survey?
The Successful Schools Survey is offered to all families, students and staff as a way to measure how each school is working for different members of it’s community. Families will have the opportunity to give feedback about issues like school fit, school climate, barriers to engagement and school safety. The survey results are completely anonymous.
When do I take the survey?
Families can take the survey between February 8th and March 12th.
How do I take the survey?
Please let us know if you have any questions or need support accessing the survey.
Marysville has been very fortunate to have Ilene Geneva Clark Waterman from Kindred Heart Quilters donate many beautiful cloth masks for our community. They come in a varitey of sizes and fabrics. If you'd like one, you can pick one up during the meal/book distribution times from 3-4:30pm on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.
If a parent, teacher, or student wants to nominate someone/themself for TAG identification they need to email the school’s TAG Facilitator. Facilitator names and email addresses are available on the Parent tab of the TAG website.
When the TAG Facilitator receives an email that someone wants to nominate a student, the facilitator goes into the shared nomination folder for their school and sends the parent nomination form to the parent, the teacher form to the student’s teacher, and the facilitator form to themself. In order to send the form, open the form that is labelled as having the language you want to use. Once it is opened, click “Send” in the upper right hand corner of the page. This will open a box where you enter the email address of the person you want to send the form to. Please make sure to put the name of the student who is being nominated in the “Message” line of the “Send Form” dialogue box.
Nominations due from parents by December 4th (digital)
Answerland's Crisis Calls resources has added a new Racial Equity Support Line. "The Racial Equity Support Line is a service led and staffed by people with lived experience of racism. Hang Pham/ she, her and hers
School Social Worker- Woodmere & Marysville
My name is Hang Pham. I am a new addition part-time School Social Worker here at Marysville Woodmere. I have heard lots of good things about our school and our team. I am so lucky to be a part of the team. I am very excited and can’t wait to serve our students, families, and communities. I understand that my role as a social worker is to empower and advocate for students and families. I promise to serve the Marysville and Woodmere students and family with all of my skills, energy, and positivities. I also want to provide all of the necessary support/ tools/ resources to all of our students and community members including BIPOC populations. I find values in being culturally informed, understanding how social location comes into play with interactions, and will strive to use strengths-based approaches to practice. My strengths lie in working with immigrants and refugees, as well as people with mental health and intersecting social identities. I want to see our students and families get the services that they needed/ deserved in order to be successful including justice and equity.
A bit more about myself: I am an alumnus of Madison HS and finishing my MSW at PSU. I am an outdoor person and I am more on the extrovert side but easy to get emotion sometimes. I am a vegetarian. I like cooking. I think that is enough for now. I will save the rest and share it with you as we go this year. Oh, one more thing that I am bilingual. If you need help with any Vietnamese students, families or anything relates to the Vietnamese language or culture please don't hesitate to reach out. I am more than happy to support you if I don't know the answer, I will help you to find out. Again, it is my honor and privilege to be on board at Marysville and Woodmere this year.

Good Information for Families:
As Teacher and School Administrator Appreciation Week comes to a close here at Portland Public Schools, I want to share an additional personal note of gratitude to all our hard-working and dedicated professional educators and school leaders. While your commitment to our students is always evident, this past year with all of its challenges was truly unlike any other in our careers. The impact of this pandemic, economic crisis, and racial uprising, has required incredible flexibility, adaptation, and perseverance on your part.
Dear High School Students and Families,
Students 16 and older at Portland school districts, including PPS, are being offered a new opportunity for free-of-charge COVID-19 vaccinations, starting this week at the Oregon Convention Center. If your 16+ student has not yet been vaccinated, we hope you will take advantage of this opportunity.

Dear PPS Community,
Portland Public Schools is in the process of developing and finalizing our 2021-22 budget for approval by the Board of Education, and we want to hear from you. Please join us for a virtual session:
During our well-being lessons this month we will be talking about the difference between mood and mindset, perspective taking and mindful movement. Each of these topics explores the way we see and feelthings and the choices we can make to change that view, when/if we want to. When we realize we(students and adults!) have the power to shift our thinking and we learn how to do this, we often feel agreater sense of control and freedom in our lives - a feeling that may seem harder to find these days. To be successful at shifting our mindset or perspective, it’s important to first be able to identify how we arefeeling. Naming our emotions is something we practice at Marysville all the time! For a refresher on oneway to recognize and accept how you are feeling in the moment, try RAIN - a mindfulness practice forwelcoming your emotions.
For more information on these practices, click on the links above. And as always, if you have any questionsor you are curious about additional emotional supports for your children please reach out. I’m happy tochat, brainstorm, offer suggestions or just listen.
I also want to share a few resources with you. This Grounding Moment practice is a great way to practice mindfulness at home, for all members of the family. And if you are noticing increased anxiety at home these days or are just looking for fun, creative ways to manage anxiety, Create More, Fear Less is a wonderful, free resource with activities for anyone to do at home. I regularly use these activities during small groups with students who have extra worries and anxious thoughts. Check ‘em out and let me know what you make!
As always, if you have any questions or you are curious about additional emotional supports for your children please reach out. I’m happy to chat, brainstorm, offer suggestions or just listen. Be well.
