Summer Scholars, 2020 – General Information

Please note that we follow a Prioritization Process for students to be placed in class. This process is outlined below.

Portland Summer Scholars 2020 is preparing to function like never before. Along with our ever-changing educational environment, our program is also observing, learning, and adapting to how we will best serve students this summer. Please read below for an outline of our 2020 Portland Summer Scholars schedule.

    Session 1:  June 22 - July 9

    Session 2:  July 13 - July 30

Students can register for either a morning or an evening course:

    AM classes:  9:00 - 12:00pm (teachers available until 12:30pm)

    PM classes:  5:00 - 8:00pm (teachers available until 8:30pm)

We will open our registration system to high school counselors by this Thursday, May 21st.

Counselors will use the same familiar registration process for all students* and will find choices between AM or PM classes in the course drop-down menu. (only one class per session)

*Seniors who need more than two classes: counselors do NOT use the registration system. Instead, please email our counselor, Jazmin Otegui, with the courses your senior needs and we will manually enroll them and communicate with their family.

Cost of Summer Scholars 2020: $0. No students will be charged for their courses this summer.

All students will be enrolled as recommend by their counselor unless we hear otherwise from the student’s guardian.

    Enrollment Prioritization

Our prioritization process uses the student’s current grade level and is as follows:

    1.   PPS Seniors

    2.   PPS Juniors - credit recovery

    3.   PPS Sophomores - credit recovery

    4.   PPS Freshmen - credit recovery

    5.   PPS Students (grades 9-11) - initial credit (only if there is room in a class)

    6.   out-of-district students - only if there is room

What this means is that if a class gets too full, we will begin dropping students from the bottom up.

Tutoring occurs before and after class in the library and counseling center, and during class in classrooms where teachers have requested extra help in their classrooms. Tutoring can be requested via our website under the “Program Info” tab.

Tuesday through Thursday ESL teachers will support ESL students in their classes.

During Summer Scholars, bus passes will be provided for students who take public transportation for them to use the following day.

    Meal Service

We have meal service at Summer Scholars for our students free of charge. Breakfast and/or lunch are served before or after class. Please note that proof of free/reduced meals eligibility is not required. All meals served to students during Evening and Summer Scholars are free of charge.

Principal's Message

  • Welcome to Portland Evening Scholars!

We are looking forward to a great year as we continue to prepare to support Portland students in their journey towards graduation.

We will be offering approximately 35 course sections across 4 nights each week for the duration of our two 14 week semesters and we will hire approximately 55 staff to make this happen.

We will provide highly qualified teachers and tutors to assist our students with their academics and we are very excited to be partnering with Portland Public School’s Virtual Scholars program where some courses will be offered online.

Our staff is dedicated in the work they do and they show this every night by unconditionally welcoming their students into the classrooms and providing them a safe place to learn.  We are on a compacted calendar with a lot to cover in a shorter amount of time so we do stress the importance of maintaining a safe and respectful learning environment.

Our program is an NCAA approved program and our teachers follow Portland Public School’s curriculum calendars for the subjects they teach.

If there is anything we can help you with or answer any questions, do not hesitate to contact us.

Thank you and welcome back to school, Portland!

    Mr. David Holm

  • An Update Regarding Limited In-Person Opportunities

    Español| Tiếng Việt| 中文| Soomaali| Русский

    Dear PPS Families and Staff,

We are now several weeks into Comprehensive Distance Learning, and simultaneously working on the next phases of a gradual re-opening of schools. PPS remains focused on published health metrics from the county and state and our medical experts. We also continue to observe Oregon Department of Education guidelines as we contemplate introducing limited in-person opportunities. While we are anxious to have all of our students back on campus, we will proceed in a measured and prudent manner that prioritizes the health and safety of our students and employees.

  • PPS Distance Learning to Continue Through January 28

    Español| Tiếng Việt| 中文| Soomaali| Русский

    Dear PPS Families and Staff,

At last evening’s Board of Education meeting, Superintendent Guerrero announced plans to extend Comprehensive Distance Learning (CDL) through the second quarter, which ends January 28. This decision is based on the latest public health data; we are hopeful that our next announcement shortly after winter break will be different, as we would much prefer to be back in our school buildings.

  • Important Update Regarding MAP Assessments

    Español| Tiếng Việt| 中文| Soomaali| Русский
    Dear PPS Families,
Whether in more typical circumstances or during our current Comprehensive Distance Learning mode, it’s important for our educators to have the best possible understanding of their students’ learning needs (this is one of the reasons we began the school year with our soft start, which prioritized student-teacher connections). One of the tools PPS uses to help teachers with that understanding is the Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) assessment.
