Enrollment Prioritization
Our prioritization process uses the student’s current grade level and is as follows:
1. PPS Seniors
2. PPS Juniors - credit recovery
3. PPS Sophomores - credit recovery
4. PPS Freshmen - credit recovery
5. PPS Students (grades 9-11) - initial credit (only if there is room in a class)
6. out-of-district students - only if there is room
What this means is that if a class gets too full, we will begin dropping students from the bottom up.
Tutoring
Tutoring occurs before and after class in the library and counseling center, and during class in classrooms where teachers have requested extra help in their classrooms. Tutoring can be requested via our website under the “Program Info” tab.
ESL
Tuesday through Thursday ESL teachers will support ESL students in their classes.
TriMet
During Summer Scholars, bus passes will be provided for students who take public transportation for them to use the following day.
Meal Service
We have meal service at Summer Scholars for our students free of charge. Breakfast and/or lunch are served before or after class. Please note that proof of free/reduced meals eligibility is not required. All meals served to students during Evening and Summer Scholars are free of charge.

Welcome to Portland Evening and Summer Scholars!
While this past year has thrown many obstacles our way, I am happy to share that we are still offering our current high school students the opportunities to recover credits towards their graduation. For the 2020 – 21 school year our Evening Scholars program will be operating remotely with all classes offered online. Due to the impact of COVID-19 on this school year, we do not yet know what the Summer Scholars 2021 structure will look like or the dates we will be operating but we definitely will be operating.
In general, Evening Scholars consists of a Fall session (October – January) and Spring session (February – May) while Summer Scholars consists of two to three sessions throughout June – August. Over the course of the year we enroll around 3000 students into any of the 34 courses we offer every session and, as we progress from Fall to Spring to Summer, our class sizes grow substantially.
If your student would prefer smaller class sizes, I would strongly recommend taking courses in the Fall where most classes have around 10 students. Spring is a bit larger (15 – 20 per class) and our Summer Scholars program is by far the highest enrolled with class sizes often going over 30 students.
Our Evening Scholars staff consists of around 50 dedicated professionals while our Summer Scholars staff grows to just over 100 professionals who work directly with students in their efforts to earn their required credits towards graduation. Not only do we have amazing classroom teachers but I’m very pleased to share that in support of our students, we also have a team of tutors, Special Education and ESL teachers, counselors, Student Success Advocates, Social Workers, and office staff to help get the kids across the finish line.
Every day we unconditionally welcome our students into our classrooms and provide them a warm, safe, and respectful place to learn. We are on a compacted calendar with a lot to cover in a shorter amount of time so we do stress the importance of maintaining a safe and respectful learning environment as well as consistent attendance.
Our program is an NCAA approved program and our teachers follow Portland Public School’s curriculum calendars for the subjects they teach.
If there is anything we can help you with or answer any questions, do not hesitate to contact us. If you have specific questions regarding your student’s graduation plans or requirements, please contact their high school counselor.
Thank you,

Dear PPS Community,
As we continue welcoming our students to hybrid in-person learning, today we want to share a new resource that is available to you. For this project, we ReImagine a Digital Experience – an experience that is easy to navigate, multilingual, user-friendly and welcoming for ALL.
Dear PPS Families,
We have been working hard to put the finishing touches on the safe return of students to our schools for hybrid learning, and are excited to see students in grades 6-8 starting next week! For families whose students will participate in hybrid instruction, we have included information and reminders to help you prepare for the first days of in-person learning this school year.
We are excited to welcome our high school students back into buildings starting April 19. It will be great see students, hear the voices in the hall and connect with one another in person. The last few weeks we have been preparing for students to return and wanted to share a few reminders to students and families.
On April 12, the Muslim community around the world prepares to start the celebration of Ramadan. PPS is a diverse district and many of our students and families will be joining in the celebrations.
