Camp Fire Columbia’s Middle School Program serves 270 students annually in the Portland Public and Reynolds School Districts. We believe our students have the abilities to achieve their goals and determine their own means to success. Our onsite school-based program staff work with students from September through May, providing mentoring, after-school programming, and academic enrichment throughout the school year.
In school, Camp Fire staff have the unique opportunity to walk alongside students acting as a mentor and an advocate. Our mentoring is focused on identity development, interpersonal relationships, goal setting, conflict resolution, and finding and exploring students’ “sparks,” which are passions that motivate them every day such as sports, art, science, helping others, and music. We check in with students about school, their future, and things they are struggling with at home and with friends. We offer resources and strategies for them to think critically about the impact they have on themselves and their community.
After-school, students meet two days a week as a Camp Fire group. During the after-school program, students complete homework, eat snacks, learn about identity and leadership, create goals, play games, build community, and have lots of fun! Additionally, Camp Fire students attend one field trip a month as a way to expand possibilities by connecting our students to people and places in Portland based on what they love to do!
