The AVID program at Lane Middle School is busting at the seams with phenomenal student leaders. From our 8th grade AVID ambassadors who serve as role models in school for organization and represent AVID at our functions to our phenomenal students who serve as tutors for their own class tutorials with the skills and questioning of a college student. Here at Lane, AVID is more than an elective, it is a community and way of representing ourselves as role models and striving achievers.
What is AVID?
Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) is a sixth grade through high school program to prepare students for success by developing skills that support students to be ready for college or career programs. The program focuses on growing writing, critical thinking, teamwork, organization and reading skills.

AVID 6th grade Survey Course
Every 6th grade student will take an AVID Survey Course to learn AVID strategies in order to be successful in all classes because Lane practices AVID Schoolwide. All classes at Lane use WICOR strategies: Writing, Inquiry, Cooperation, Organization, and Reading. Students are expected to use provided school planners, an organized binder, take focused notes such as Cornell Notes, and participate in collaborative thinking. Students will also begin college and career exploration.
AVID Elective Students in 7th and 8th grades
AVID program participants must choose to participate and demonstrate this choice by completing an application and interview process. If selected, AVID students are encouraged to enroll in rigorous academic classes and in the AVID elective class, where they receive academic support. AVID students participate in college field trips, team building activities and career exploration.
The AVID curriculum, based on over 30 years of research and rigorous standards, is developed by middle and senior high school teachers in collaboration with college professors. It emphasizes teaching pedagogy which focuses on writing-to-learn, inquiry, collaboration, organization, and reading for comprehension. This allows college preparatory classes to be accessible to all students.
Tutors are available in the AVID elective class on Tuesdays and Thursdays. They facilitate student access to rigorous curriculum. Tutors also serve as role models, as many are students from local colleges and universities or are active community members. Tutors are trained to provide academic support.
