  • Ainsworth Back to School Open House

    Hello Ainsworth Community,

We look forward to welcoming you to our Back to School Open House this Thursday from 6:00-7:30pm. We are excited to share with you our new format which will be fun for the whole family. Please bring your Ainsworth Eagle(s) with you as you meet classroom teachers and specialists. We will have passports and maps available at every entry to help you navigate the night. Please know you can travel around the school in any order, anytime between 6-7:30pm, but plan to spend the most time in your child’s classroom. This is where your child will show you around the room, introduce you to the teacher and you will be able to sign up for a parent-teacher conference. Remember to stop by the auditorium to say hello to Kris and Grace and meet our fantastic parent groups, PTA and Foundation, to pick up your child’s Back to School Surprise.
We look forward to seeing you soon!

    With Appreciation,
    Kris & Grace
  • Welcome Kindergarten and New Families

Welcome Kindergarten and New Ainsworth Families!

As the interim New Family Mentor and Hospitality Chair for the school year, I would like to welcome you to the Ainsworth Community. All of us on the Ainsworth PTA look forward to meeting you soon!

If you have general questions about starting at Ainsworth, please don't hesitate to reach out! Contact me, Lynn Brown, portlandlb@msn.com, mom of a kindergartener, 3rd grader and twin 5th graders.

We hope you were able to attend the Kindergarten and New Family Social and the Playdate in the Park last week. Both were fun opportunities to let the kids socialize with classmates, find a friendly face, and to meet other parents and a few staff members. We’ve had a bumpy start with the air quality and fires, but I think despite a few tears, the first day of school for our Kinders was a success! And hopefully for those of you with new students in older grades, they are already settling in to their new digs.

You should have received the News & Notes email from Principal Kris Meyer, with some of the below information, but we know it’s a lot to take in – and we wanted to provide a few FAQs to help ease you in for the year, as well as a few other helpful links. We look forward to meeting you, and having a great year at Ainsworth.

    Warmly,
    Lynn Brown

    Ainsworth FAQs

    Where do I park?
Roads get busy around pickup and drop off every day. If you are going to the building with your child, park a block or two away and walk. Rules are in place to ensure safety, including the following: do not drive down SW Spring St next to the school; do not walk across SW Vista Ave at SW Spring St, instead cross at the light at SW Elm St; do not stop on SW Vista Ave in front of school.

If you are dropping off your child, there is a “kiss and drop” along the north side of the school at Elm St, between SW Montgomery and SW 21st Ave. Enter Elm from Montgomery, drop your child off at the designated area (there are signs), then exit by turning left onto SW 21st. Do not continue on SW Elm to SW Vista.

What is the Back to School Booster Pack and and how do I fill it out?
Click here for the Back to School Booster Pack – it contains online order forms for:
    •  online school directory (formerly known as the Buzz Book - you’ll need access to this to contact your child’s classmate’s families),
    • ordering your child’s yearbook
    • purchasing tickets to PTA fundraisers like the Garden Tour and Holiday Home Tour, and tickets for other school events, including Buckaroo
    • Additional fundraising opportunities!
Where can I get Ainsworth Gear?
Get your Ainsworth Spirit on!  All orders will be delivered the office, and you will be notified when ready. Order Here!

How do I keep up on what’s happening at school?
One very important way to keep up on the important news from school is to read the bi-weekly News & Notes email from Principal Kris Meyer and Assistant Principal Grace Casale (sent by the Principal’s Secretary, Noah Chadd, nchadd@pps.net).

We also encourage you to learn more about the Ainsworth PTA and Ainsworth Foundation. Getting involved is the best way to have a pulse on the school happenings and meet your community!

On Facebook: Ainsworth Elementary School Official

    How can I get involved?
There are many ways to be part of the community: in the classroom, in the lunchroom, with art and music, at recess, PTA, Foundation, with specific events – Like Buckaroo, Book Fair, Field Days, Science Fair, Red Ball Auction - the list is plentiful and there will certainly be a match for your skill set and interest. Our community is as great as we make it!

Volunteer opportunities are listed in News & Notes and emailed by room parents and our PTA Volunteer Coordinator, Jill Kulas at ainsworthvolunteers@gmail.com .  The PTA website has a great list of volunteer opportunities.

To volunteer at school, you must submit a background check form, which can be found here.  You must also sign in and out at the office every time you volunteer.

How do I pay for school lunch?
If you’d like your child to be able to purchase lunch, you need to set up an account and pay online at https://www.schoolcafe.com To sign up, you’ll need your child’s ID number, which you can get from the office (503-916-6288 or email Kendall Bromley, the School Secretary, at kbromley@pps.net).  You may also drop a check by to the lunchroom manager.

Where do I find bus schedules?
Buses are available for children who live within the Ainsworth school boundary. Schedules can be found at http://www.pps.k12.or.us/depts-c/bus/index.php. Select Ainsworth on the drop-down menu. Make sure to check out snow routes, which differ from the regular schedule, both in time and location. You should get a phone call on inclement weather days letting you know if school is cancelled, delayed, or snow routes  are in effect.

What after school activities are available?
In addition to Ainsworth’s excellent on-site after care , many opportunities for after school activities arise throughout the year. Some are organized informally among parents and take place off campus, and others are offered on campus. Please check the PTA website here for schedules and links to registrations. The schedules will be fully updated soon!

We recently moved to Oregon from another state. Anything special we should know?
Welcome to Oregon! One thing to note as school begins is that OR requires Hepatitis A vaccination while other states may not. Check OR vaccination requirements at http://public.health.oregon.gov/preventionwellness/vaccinesimmunization/gettingimmunized/pages/school.aspx

Late starts, teacher in-service days and vacations.
Visit the PPS District Calendar 2017-2018 for the annual calendar.

Take a look ahead at the school calendar to make sure you have childcare coverage and are aware of the late starts and various days off in the PPS school year. On late start days, school begins 2 hours late (10:05 a.m. final bell). The school bus will pick up students two hours after their regularly scheduled time.

    Welcome to Kindergarten

    Hello Kindergarten Families,

We are very excited to welcome you to Ainsworth! We will be sending out our first News & Notes later today, and wanted to send a special note to all of you first with a few important items.

Kindergarten & New Family Popsicle Social:

Come to the front “field” to meet some of our fabulous staff and get to know each other from 11:00am-12:00pm on Tuesday, August 29th.

    PTA Sponsored Kindergarten Picnic:

Join your fellow kindergarten families, as well as our school counselor Rebecca Cohen and PTA co-presidents Anna Short and Natalie Willes, for a casual BYOPicnic on Thursday, August 31st at 5:30 pm at Portland Heights Park.

Ms. Cohen will have some wonderful activities planned for the little ones, and you will have a chance to meet other parents and find out a little bit more about Ainsworth before the school year begins. If you might be interested in volunteering next year, Anna and Natalie will be available to answer your questions. We also have many kindergarten families with older siblings who would be happy to help you navigate this new experience for your family.

Most importantly, dessert will be provided.

    Community Care Day:

Come get to know your community by coming to Ainsworth on Saturday, August 26th from 9am-noon. We would love your help getting the school grounds ready and it is always a fun day!

    Kindergarten Assessment Sign-Ups:

You will receive a separate email later today with a link to sign up for a 25-minute assessment time for your child on either August 30th or 31st. Teachers will take time to get to know your child and also have you fill out some important information.

You will receive the following email right before school starts, but here is a sneak peek:

We are so excited to welcome you Tuesday morning for your child’s first day of kindergarten. We know many of you feel like it’s your first day too, so here are some tips to get you through…

    The Night Before:

Make sure your child gets a good night's sleep and enjoys a healthy breakfast for a smooth start to the first day.

Show your excitement and positive attitude about your child’s first day (even if you are feeling a little nervous yourself). Your child will follow your lead.

Morning of the First Day of School:

Do your best to arrive between 7:50 and 8:00am and line up outside the kinder wing on the ramp.

You may walk your child into the classroom and help put his/her things away and find his/her desk.

Take a picture, give a hug, smile and say goodbye. The sooner your little one gets used to the morning routine, the sooner they can start to build community with their teacher and peers.

We know there may be tears (from parents too) but we promise we are well equipped and ready to begin a positive kindergarten adventure. Your child is in excellent hands with our kinder team!

Just in case you forget all that is mentioned above, we will ring a little reminder bell to help you say, “See you after school. I can’t wait to hear about your day.”

Short goodbyes and long hellos are the key.

    Afternoon of the First Day:

Get ready to greet your little one at the end of the day with big smiles and hugs at 2:15pm. Please do not enter the hallway to meet your students. Teachers will release students directly to parents through their outside doors on the front field.

As soon as you can, we would like you to drop your child off at the kinder wing door at the top of the ramp and not walk your student all the way to class. We are excited to get in the rhythm and routine of kindergarten. We know it is going to be a fantastic year!

If your student will be a bus rider, we personally escort all kindergarteners to and from the bus. (Please stop by the office to pick up your child’s bus tag). If your student will participate in our After Care program, the After Care staff will also pick up all kindergarteners and escort them to After Care.

If your child is expressing any worries about their first day of kinder, this might be a good virtual read aloud:

Once again, we are thrilled to welcome you to Ainsworth! We have a warm and wonderful community and look forward to having you be a part. See you soon!

    With Appreciation,

    Kris & Grace
