Guadalupe Guerrero has been named the recipient of the national Superintendent of the Year Award by the Association of Latino Administrators and Superintendents (ALAS).

Superintendent Guerrero, who this month is celebrating his four-year anniversary in Portland Public Schools, will be honored Saturday in Washington D.C. at the ALAS 18th Annual National Gala Awards and Dinner.

During his tenure, the district has made a concerted effort toward a Racial Equity and Social Justice agenda, establishing a community-created Vision and a multiyear Strategic Plan. He has been a vocal proponent of key areas, including climate justice, arts education and student voice. While at the helm, the district has navigated the COVID-19 pandemic with an emphasis on student health and learning.

Under his leadership, the district moved toward comprehensive middle schools, with three opening and another coming 2022-23. During his tenure, the district has made steady increases in graduation rates, reaching 83.7% in 2019-20, while prioritizing improving the achievement of African American and Native American students.
