Description
Welcome and introduction by Aurora Hymel, the Senior Director of College & Career Readiness.
The Other Side of College Admissions: A Very Human Process. Tamara will be sharing the story of her pathway to college as well as advice for students & parents as they start this journey for themselves. This discussion will also include a moderated Q&A session with Tamara to gain her perspective on some of the most pressing questions in college admissions today.

Description
Whether you're just starting to think about college or needing guidance to research and organize your search, this workshop will provide timeline and suggestions for task completion to keep your search as effective as possible "College fit" includes considering your academic goals, geographic preferences, ways you like to be socially engaged, cost, and your career goals. Taking time to evaluate these will help you to hone in on certain schools and programs.

What is the difference between grants and loans? When and how do I apply for financial aid? How do scholarships fit into financial aid? This session will provide an overview and guidance to understanding the basics about financial aid which is key to your college decision.

Her passion is ensuring equitable educational opportunities exist for all students.

Supporting the Transition to College: Academically and Emotionally

What's involved in leaving a high school institution and entering a new one as a young adult? Apprenticeship is Advanced Training after HS
Description
Sometimes called an "earn and learn" program, an Apprenticeship requires classroom learning plus paid On-the-Job Training (OJT). On their first day of OJT, a Carpenter's apprentice earns $25 per hour. In addition, apprentices earn 64 college credits. Find out what it takes to be a top candidate for advanced training at the Pacific Northwest Carpenters Institute.

In her current role as Business Program Manager for Microsoft Philanthropies she is running one of the largest workplace giving programs in the world.

The ability to earn college credit while in high school offers students several benefits: A smoother transition between high school and college. Description
This session will be a panel discussion with mental wellness support service professionals from several colleges and universities. Discussion will include the types of supports higher ed institutions offer, recommendations around the types of pre planning families can do to ensure their student has the mental wellness supports in place as they make the transition to college.

Supporting the Transition to College: Academically and Emotionally
Description
What's involved in leaving a high school institution and entering a new one as a young adult? What are some of the concrete differences (how you earn credit, choice in choosing times/days of week, tracking your financial aid, process for dropping classes, seeking help?) Also, what about the emotional transitions for students? These and many other issues will be discussed as students and families prepare for this transition to college.

Yamile Nataren is an Admissions Counselor at PSU. She pursued a career in student affairs after working with first-generation high school students in the LA area. In 2018, she was the first in her family to graduate, receiving her degree from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo in Poli Sci. She recently received a Masters in Education from the University of Southern California and is excited to continue working with students and families to make higher education accessible.

Description

As the PIL College Access Supervisor in the PPS's Athletic Department, Wendell's experience as a Division 1 player, coach, and administrator lends his expertise to counsel, mentor, and inspire hundreds of student-athletes at the high school and collegiate levels. Wendell commands a thorough understanding of NCAA academic & eligibility requirements and compliance, and allows for him to provide insight and perspective into the pressures and challenges that serious student-athletes face.

Apprenticeship is Advanced Training after HS
Description
Sometimes called an "earn and learn" program, an Apprenticeship requires classroom learning plus paid On-the-Job Training (OJT). On their first day of OJT, a Carpenter's apprentice earns $25 per hour. In addition, apprentices earn 64 college credits. Find out what it takes to be a top candidate for advanced training at the Pacific Northwest Carpenters Institute.

How to Prepare for the Ever Changing World of Work
Description
It is the nature of the markets to change. Most changes are relatively subtle and happen over time, sometimes slower, sometimes faster. Sometimes there are external factors that force major changes to the markets and the workplace. COVID-19 is one of those external factors.This course is a very brief introduction on how these changes affect career choices for students in a time of rapid market changes.

HBCU Panel
Description
Panel will include HBCU alumni that will discuss why they chose the route of attending an HBCU, their experiences there, and how culture played a role in that experience coming from the northwest. The panel will also answer questions from students and families.

Graduated from Grambling State University. La Shanda Hurst is a native of Portland, Oregon. She attended Sabin Elementary, Beaumont Middle and Grant High school. La Shanda is a graduate of Grambling State University and a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. In her current role as Business Program Manager for Microsoft Philanthropies she is running one of the largest workplace giving programs in the world.

Attended South Carolina State University. Has taught for 20 years at the primary, secondary, and collegiate levels. Currently serves as the Academic Programs Associate in the department of College and Career Readiness in PPS.

Attended Grambling State University. Currently serving as the Vice Principal at Leodis V. McDaniel High School in Portland, OR.

Graduated from Savannah State University in 2012 with a BA in Public Relations and Advertising. She is currently serving as the Communications Consultant for Oregon Family Support Network.

Earning College Credit while in HS
Description
The ability to earn college credit while in high school offers students several benefits: A smoother transition between high school and college. First-hand exposure to college-level work while still in high school and a chance to complete your bachelor's degree faster. This session will explore the various opportunities available to students during high school.

Tara Harding, originally from Arizona, taught history in NYC for 14 years before moving to Portland. She is now the PPS Teacher on Special Assignment for Advanced Placement. Her goal is to encourage and support diverse students in taking on the challenge of AP classes. She has a fifth grade daughter at Creston Elementary.
