Vandalism at Capitol Hill
We have had several instances of vandalism as well as a recent break in at Capitol Hill. Apparently, several families were on the playground when the break in happened. If you see something unusual or concerning, we urge you to call the non-emergency police line or 911 depending on the severity. Safety is a priority for us and we need your help to make our school the safest it can be.
Student Pickup
Parents and approved people on a child’s pick up list must have their identification with them to take their child from school. We will be asking everyone for ID since it's hard to see who is who with the masks on.
Bus Riders
If you requested transportation for your child to and/or from school, the Transportation Department set up your stops based on your address. If you want your child to get off at a different place or ride a different bus, you have to work with transportation to make that change. Changes are taking about 2 weeks at this point. Capitol Hill staff cannot make changes to your child’s assigned bus or assigned bus stop. Changes are between you and transportation. Please do not send a note or email to the office or teacher requesting a change because we are unable to alter the bus assignments. Transportation’s contact information can be found here.

Safety
Childcare: Champions, our child care provider, will be operating during hybrid instruction. Champions is not a Capitol Hill program but a partner organization. If you have questions about enrolling your child, safety standards, or anything else, please contact Melodee Andrada or Aiko Sato. Also, the district has provided an FAQ that you might find helpful.
Reminder: There is no school on April 9 due to teacher planning and report card preparation.
Retention: Lately we have gotten a lot of inquiries from families about grade retention for next year. The COVID-19 pandemic has presented unique challenges for schools since March of 2020. We recognize that, as a result, students at all grade levels have had a wide range of learning experiences in Comprehensive Distance Learning (CDL). Because of this, we will be emphasizing Learning Recovery and Acceleration for all grade levels in the 2021-22 school year. We believe that students, despite varied CDL experiences, will benefit from progressing to the next grade with their grade-level peers in the 2021-22 school year. Therefore, we are not supporting retention as a learning recovery strategy at any grade level. The following is research that outlines some of the detriments of retention:
Please review the attached drop off and dismissal procedures for the ‘19-‘20 school year. Help us make safety a priority by following these guidelines. Here are a few very important things to remember about drop off and pick up. Our building opens at 7:45am so please wait until that time to drop your child off at school. Please remember to return your After School Plan on the first day of school so we know how your child is getting home. I encourage your to visit our school website at www.pps.net/capitolhill for school supply lists, upcoming events, student/parent handbook, important reminders, and classroom updates.
As your new Principal, I am honored to join the Capitol Hill Community. The high level of dedication, care, and support each family and staff member shows at our school has already become apparent in the short time I have been here. If you volunteer at our school, thank you! If you don’t, please consider signing up. The first step is filling out the background check at www.pps.net/Page/149. It takes a village to raise children and we would love to have you join ours. I am committed to working with each of you to create a nurturing school environment that meets your needs and expectations.
Thank you for entrusting us with your precious child. We are committed to ensuring that Capitol Hill is a safe and loving place that truly is a great place to learn and grow. Please drop by, call or email me if you ever you have a question, concern, or would simply like to introduce yourself.
Sincerely,
Aimee Alexander-Shea
Principal

We have been working hard to put the finishing touches on the safe return of students to our schools for hybrid learning, and are excited to see students in grades 6-8 starting next week! For families whose students will participate in hybrid instruction, we have included information and reminders to help you prepare for the first days of in-person learning this school year.
We are excited to welcome our high school students back into buildings starting April 19. It will be great see students, hear the voices in the hall and connect with one another in person. The last few weeks we have been preparing for students to return and wanted to share a few reminders to students and families.
