KBPS Presents Almost Monday live in Concert!
-
On Friday December 13th, Disney recording artists Almost Monday with Hollywood Records rocked a free concert for the PPS community at Benson Polytechnic High School. The first KBPS concert back in our new auditorium was a huge success, produced and organized by the school district’s radio station AM 1450 KBPS and by BATS, The Benson Auditorium Technical Staff. This show was put on with student’s involvement in on-air, print and ground promotion, production, video, photography, lighting, sound, security and set up and breaks down with the direction of teacher Jacob Patterson. Just some of the many leadership skills students learn through the KBPS Broadcasting program. A special shout out to VooDoo Doughnuts and James Littlejohn’s Kenton Station for providing VIP backstage food and to KOIN 6 News for coming out for local coverage.
The fun event happened thanks to a longtime partnership between KBPS and music promoters Moxie, who’ve partnered with the PPS Radio Station on events for artists including Rihanna, Nightly, Knox, Boogie Wit Da Hoodie, and Almost Monday. KBPS students gave the thumbs up to Almost Monday’s new album Dive during a preview and review listening session in class. Students really liked songs Can’t Slow Down, She Likes Sports, Jupiter, Tidal Wave, and Sunburn; not to mention the entire album. KBPS started playing the songs and popularity continued to grow. KBPS Instructor Jacob Patterson contacted Moxie and the record company and organized the event. Many thanks to all the students in KBPS and BATS who produced the event. Many thanks to all Benson Staff and Admin for their time volunteering at the event and support. Many thanks to all who came and heard about the show via the station AM 1450 and KBPS.am.
It was a very exciting, and potentially once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for our community to work directly with the band Almost Monday and enjoy such a unique show that close. While on their first-ever world tour of their brand new debut album, they are selling out concerts and selling out of their merch left-and-right. Just weeks ago, they played concerts in South Korea, Japan, Philippines, Malaysia, and Indonesia. Their final concerts of 2024 were in Portland including the concert at Benson. The band takes a couple weeks off for the holidays before launching their Dive Tour all across the United States and the World. They’ve already sold out their shows in Chicago, Amsterdam, and Paris - so very cool that we were able to be included on that list.

KBPS Artist Interview: Goodnight, Texas
Goodnight, Texas - Band talks with KBPS students following recent concerts in the Portland area. Students researched band, prepared questions and conducted interview! Here's more from their website: Goodnight, Texas is a band you’ve almost certainly heard by accident somewhere. And now on second look, you’re deep in their catalog and they’re telling you stories about trapped coal miners and lovebird bank robbers. Banjos and mandolins twinkle. Now you’re seeing Avi Vinocur and Patrick Dyer Wolf and their band live and they’re swelling to a fever pitch, suddenly singing quiet harmonies off-mic, and then rocking out again. You’re talking to them at the merch table for a good while and you’re legitimately excited about their new album Signals because, more than ever before, it captures the vast dynamic range of the show and blends it with their expansive and intricate songwriting.

Nation's Largest CTE High School and Oregon's Most Expensive High School - Benson Polytechnic High School - Reopens!
August 29, 2024
Portland, Oregon (KBPS) - Benson Tech is now the biggest CTE high school in the United States, and it's the most expensive high school in Oregon history. After three years of construction and a nine-figure budget, the brand new Benson Polytechnic High School campus has been completed and the first students to use the facility were greeted by teachers and staff this week. "CTE" or Career Technical Education, is a learning structure that allows students to get hands-on education with industry standard equipment, preparing them for their careers and college after high school. The new construction includes a large open space where students can eat lunch, classrooms with up-to-date industry standard technology, and some features from the old Benson building too. Historic places like the original entrance, gym, and auditorium have been preserved to maintain their history while also updating the building's infrastructure for seismic retrofitting and expanding the campus capacity. The public is invited to come see and tour the newly-modernized Benson Polytechnic High School during a Grand Opening Ceremony on Saturday Sept. 14th from 10a-2p. Benson also invites the public to it's big annual showcase called Tech Show, which is scheduled for April 17th and 18th, 2025 in the evening. - This story was produced by the KBPS Student Staff.
