May 2023
So much to celebrate at Faubion in April. We held our first Literacy Night, with nothing but positive reviews! Additionally, we brought back STEAM Night, which was a hit for all. Much gratitude to our staff and parents who led and supported these endeavors. And we celebrated Earth Day by working with our partners Wind & Oar to visit Willamette Sailing club. Soon we will have a third boat to sell! Now on to May…the last full month of school!

Selecting School Wide SEL Programs-
Wayfinder www.withwayfinder.com
This curriculum is about building confidence, what to do with big feelings, social/emotional growth. Ms. Williams, 1st grade teacher is implementing and loving the curriculum so far. Assistant Principal, Cynthia Kieffer, asked for input from parents regarding the curriculum.
Q -- A parent asked if we can do a family night that explains and helps implement the curriculum at home. A -- AP Cynthia Kieffer answered that part of the Wayfinder model includes parent events to help explain to families how it works
Q -- A parent asked if the curriculum is engaging (not just a video that kids need to watch) A -- AP Kieffer answered that this is more interactive and will take place during the morning circle time and health/social studies segments in class.
A high school teacher parent mentioned that they are noticing at the HS level that kids are not able to deal with their emotions and it does inhibit learning.
Middle school plans to adopt We Do It 4 The Culture www.wedoit4theculture.com
This curriculum teaches kids how to advocate for self, how to look for/notice the voices that are not being heard or represented. A video lesson with a led discussion around the topic. Example - One lesson is "What Latino inventors are left out when we talk about inventors" There is also discussions around music, pop culture, etc. Lesson plans are led by teachers.
The parent group in attendance agreed that this work is important and needed and we support the curriculum. Look for more information in upcoming emails and the Faubion Future newsletter or email Assistant Principal Kieffer at ckieffer@pps.net
