Dear Families,

I hope your week has gone well and that you have some fun plans for the upcoming Memorial Day Weekend.  As you may have heard, I have been away from school the last two days because I tore my achilles while playing tennis on Wednesday.  It was a rather undramatic, you are so middle-aged, style of injury.  Fortunately, I will not need surgery, but I am casted up (Duniway purple of course) and on the road to recovery.

Well, we are down to our final 9 days of the 2020-2021 school year and summer break is very much on the horizon.  There has been no shortage of conversation about “learning loss,” and other impacts from the pandemic.  As you begin to finalize summer plans, including thinking about how you might support your child’s academic growth, take a quick look at this article which highlights the importance of making space for plenty of FUN this summer.  As is often the case, finding a balance seems to be key.

Here are a few announcements:

  • Although many of you are now vaccinated, and some guidelines are being relaxed, please know that anyone on school property must still wear a mask and no parents, volunteers, or other family members are allowed into the classrooms or the building.  We appreciate your understanding and truly hope that we are able to welcome everyone back into the building in the fall.

  • Today is the final day of our week-long Sellwood Virtual 5K.  We are extraordinarily grateful to everyone who participated at the events this weekend, or who joined us virtually! If you have not yet registered but wish to support the work of the Duniway PTA please register today.  All registrations received by tomorrow will be entered into a drawing of our grand prize, a $500 gift certificate to Sellwood Cycle.  Thank you again for being a part of this community!

  • Calling all Duniway Dragons! Join in Duniway's Music Share Flipgrid by recording a short video to showcase your musical skills! Check your child's Music tab in Seesaw for details and directions. Video submissions are due on Flipgrid by Friday, June 4. Reach out to Lisa Adams ladams1@pps.net with any questions.

  • Join us on the Reed College Place, Median (between Lambert and Rex) at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, June 9th, to celebrate our amazing 5th graders. Please be sure to wear a mask and observe physical distancing.

  • Last day of school is Friday, June 11th.  Progress reports will be mailed home and should arrive between June 18th - June 22nd.

  • As mentioned in prior communications, the building will be closed beginning on June 18th and will not re-open until late August due to phase one of the roofing project.  Office staff will continue to be working remotely, so please email if you need assistance.

  • Detailed Information about the 2021-2022 School Year, including teacher assignments, will be mailed home during the week of August 16th.

Have a great holiday weekend.

Regards,
Matt
