Duniway Community Update

Dear Families,

I think it is safe to say that the 2020-2021 School Year was unlike anything we (as adults and as students ourselves) have ever experienced before or have ever really taken a moment to even imagine.  I want to send a big congratulations to our 5th graders who are moving on to great things.  We thank them for their dedication and their contributions to the Duniway community.  We wish them the very best in the coming years.  I also want to thank those Duniway families who are moving on.  Without the support of parents, guardians, relatives, and other caring adults the Duniway community would not be what it is today.

It always feels that summer arrives at just the right time and this year is no exception.  In some ways there seems to be a long list of things to do this summer and yet, there also is a sense of exhaustion and need for rest and recovery.  For me, I will try to get myself walking again, read some good books, and spend time with family and friends.  I hope each of you finds space for a wide and varied summer -  quality time with your child and family, curling up with a good bookexploring our great state, and just plain time to relax and refresh!

From Music Teacher Lisa Adams:  Thank you to the 60 + Duniway students who contributed to the End of Year Music Share! Amazing work, Duniway Dragons! Feel free to leave notes of encouragement for our students by following these directions:

From School Social Worker Alexis Scher:  Here are several collections of resources for over the summer:  Student and Family ResourcesSummer Activities for Kids of All AgesFree and Low Cost Summer Activities for Kids and Families

New Meal Distribution Sites for Summer:  From June 21 through August 20, grab-and-go meal sacks, with breakfast and lunch, will be available between 3 and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday at 15 PPS sites for all children in the community ages 1-18 (this includes PPS students as well as children not enrolled at PPS). The closest location is Grout Elementary (3119 SE Holgate Blvd.) Here is the list of all distribution sites.  Please note that meals will not be distributed on Monday, July 5, as the district will be closed in observance of the Independence Day holiday.

Access on Online Tools:  Students will have access to most PPS Digital Toolkit applications during the summer. Students who enroll in summer school may notice changes in some applications once summer school begins. Most PPS Digital Toolkit applications will remain active until the end of July. Applications may be temporarily unavailable at the beginning of August as PPS shifts to the 2021-2022 school year.

Looking Ahead to the 2021-2022 School Year...Dates/Information to Remember

Start/End time will be returning to our “normal” schedule.  8:45 AM - 3:00 PM and a regular 5 day/week is being planned. Back to School Letters, including teacher assignment, will be emailed to families during the week of August 17th.

  • August 30th:  Welcome Back Gathering; 3:30 PM - 5:30 PM
  • September 1st:  First day of school for 2nd - 5th Graders

  • September 1st/2nd:  1st Grade Ramp Up (First full day for whole class, 9/3)

  • September 1st - 7th: Kindergarten Ramp Up (First full day for whole class, 9/8)

  • September 22nd:  Back to School Night; 6:30 - 8:00 PM

On behalf of our entire staff, we wish everyone a restful, rejuvenating, and hopefully back-to-normal summer break.  We too look forward to taking time away from work this summer, but please know we will do our best to respond to questions or issues that come up over the summer. Your best bet is to email MattSarah, or Lynn as the school will be closed for roof construction.

Be well, stay healthy and safe, and get out there and enjoy!
