Duniway Update 10/1

Posted by Sarah Erickson on 10/1/2021

Dear Families,

Fall is here and the weather is starting to change.  Our windows in the classroom will remain open for the majority of the year.  Make sure your child wears appropriate clothing as it may get cold in their room.  The teacher will determine how many windows are open as it gets colder.

I wanted to share with you some fantastic news. The new math adoption that is being implemented this year had a poster with different hand signals on it.  One hand signal looked like someone was pointing a gun.  Mrs. Vogel’s class noticed this and stated that it made them feel uncomfortable.  The class took action.  They notified the district and the company.  Below is the response from the company which produces the math curriculum.

Dear Ms. Vogel’s Grade 3 Students,

Thank you for letting us know about the hand signal on our math poster and how it made you feel. We appreciate that you brought your concerns to us.

We looked at the poster again from your perspective and here’s what we did:

  1. We immediately took down all website links to the poster.
  2. We asked our warehouse to destroy all printed versions of the poster.
  3. We are going to redesign the poster. (We like your suggestion of two-fingers for “I have another idea.”)

Our actions are the direct result of your thoughtful, honest, and kind feedback. We hope you will keep sharing when things make you uncomfortable and make your voices heard.

All the best,

Your friends at Curriculum Associates

That is so cool and congratulations to Mrs. Vogel’s class for making their voices heard.
