  • UPDATED: COVID screening testing forms and email

In late August, the below email was sent to all PPS families. It references a testing consent form. Links to PDFs of the consent form for parents or guardians of students under the age of 15 are here:

Links for students aged 15 to 18 to fill out themselves are here:

All forms should be brought to the main office after filling them out.

    Here is the district email:

    Dear Families and Students,

We wanted to provide you with an update on our plans for weekly COVID-19 testing for asymptomatic students and staff, known as “screening” testing.

Thanks to the Oregon Health Authority, we plan to support free weekly COVID-19 screening testing to PPS students and unvaccinated staff. Screening testing is for individuals who are not showing symptoms and do not have a known exposure to COVID-19.

    Screening Testing
PPS is ready to provide this screening testing option to your students. However, the Oregon Health Authority has yet to provide the complete details of this screening option.

Here is what we do know:

    • Unvaccinated staff who are enrolled in this regular screening testing will be sent test kits to their homes.  They will administer the test in their home and mail it in.  They will receive the results within 24 hours.
    • Students whose families sign a consent for testing (17 years and under) will be provided the screening kit to bring home one time per week.  The following morning, the family will administer the test and send it to school with their child.  Collection sites will be at each school. A courier from the Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU), who is administering the program, will pick up the kits on specific days for each school.  Families will receive the results within 24 hours.
    • OHA and OHSU will first focus on students in grades K-5 for PPS, since there is no vaccine for this age group at this time.  As they build their testing capacity, they will increase the number of tests they can run daily.
    • For both students and staff, if a positive result is received, families and/or staff will be asked to contact their school. This will help us limit exposure and begin the process for contact tracing and quarantine.
    • PPS will also receive confirmation of a positive result from the Multnomah County Health Department who will begin the process for contact tracing and quarantining.

    Symptomatic/Diagnostic Testing
We will continue to offer symptomatic/diagnostic testing in each school, as we have done since March, to students and staff who display symptoms of COVID-19 during the school day. Public health experts agree that these rapid tests are more important to strengthening our effort to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 as it will determine in short order whether someone has COVID-19. We will follow the quarantining process immediately.

We eagerly wait for more information from the Oregon Health Authority, and they have informed us that they plan to have more information to share with PPS families within the next few days. In the meantime, we will continue to follow the additional layers of our health and safety measures, will offer testing for students or staff who display symptoms during the school day and will follow all guidance from our local health experts.

    Why is COVID-19 Testing Important?
We know that regular testing, in addition to COVID-19 vaccination, is a safe, effective way to help prevent the spread of COVID-19 and help keep schools open for in-person learning.

Many people with COVID-19, including children and teens, don’t have symptoms but can still spread the virus, so regular testing helps find people who have the virus before it can spread to others. However, it is important to note that testing itself does not prevent the spread of infection.

Finding who has the virus early means steps can be taken to prevent COVID-19 from spreading and causing an outbreak, so schools can stay open. Regular testing also means parents or guardians get notified if their child tests positive, allowing them to plan for treatment and take steps to protect the rest of the family from COVID-19.

Regular COVID-19 testing, in addition to each layer of safety we’ve planned for in our schools, works together. We know that the combination of our layered safety measures helps to better ensure a healthy learning environment. We’ve upgraded our air filters to MERV 13 standards across every school, and will have HEPA filters in every classroom. And we know that it will take all of us doing our part, wearing our masks, washing our hands, and getting a vaccine shot when eligible, to keep ourselves and each other safe.

We hope this latest information is helpful. We will be sure to share further updates as they happen in the dynamic situation that continues as we begin the school year.

Thank you for your support and understanding.

  • Upcoming Events at Roosevelt

    Hi Rider families,

I can’t believe we are nearing the end of August. Everyone at Roosevelt has been working to get ready to welcome students back to in person classes.

We are watching COVID-19 rates very closely, and we are working with our colleagues at the district and in public health to make sure we are following all of the safety measures to make sure we all stay healthy. We are happy to announce that we will have a free COVID-19 vaccination clinic during registration. If you, or anyone in your family ages 12 and up, still need to get vaccinated, make sure to stop by during registration.

We have been busy hiring teachers and other support staff. We will be welcoming over 1430 students to Roosevelt on September 1st. We have some new Vice Principals, and I’m sure you’ll meet them in the coming weeks. Last year, Liz Mahlum joined our team as a Vice Principal, and this year we are welcoming Steve Shepherd, and Zulema Naegele to our team. Kerri West will be Vice Principal working with students new to the United States at both Roosevelt and McDaniel.

We’re excited to see you at our upcoming events over the next two weeks!

    Registration (Aug 25-27)
Your student will get their yearbook picture taken and receive their PPS ID with their Trimet pass embedded in it, so they can ride public transportation. You can meet our partners and programs, apply for our free lunch program, and more. Also, anyone ages 12 or up can get their first COVID-19 vaccination for free. The Roosevelt website shows days and times for you to attend by grade and last name. The grade level and last name assignments are suggestions to spread attendees out and thus avoid long lines, so if your suggested day or time does not work for you, you may attend any of the three days between 9:00 AM and 3:00 PM. If you cannot attend any registration day, your student can get their picture taken for a bus pass in the main office once school begins.

You will be able to see your student’s schedule in ParentVUE and StudentVUE starting August 25 as well.

    Community care day (Aug 28)
Please join us on Saturday August 28th for Community Care Day (9:00 AM - 12:00 PM)! We will focus on getting our grounds ready for students and families. Please bring any gardening tools you might want to use. We are excited to see you!. Here’s a link to more information.

    Welcome days (Aug 30-31)
9th grade family orientation: Monday, August 30 (6:30 - 8:00 PM) - we’ll be on the front lawn, so bring a chair or a blanket if you want.
10th grade Jump Start (students only): Tuesday, August 31 (10:30 AM - 12:00 PM) - come celebrate the beginning of your first year in person in high school. Play lawn games, listen to music, and get to know your classmates

First day of school (Sep 1)
9th graders will start at 8:30 AM, and everyone else will begin at 10:30. We will have periods 1-4 on the first day of school, NOT periods 1-8 as previously advertised.

In addition to these Roosevelt events, the Native American Rehabilitation Association (NARA) has upcoming August 24 & 31 COVID-19 clinics and school supplies events open to all. This flyer has more info.

    Hola familias Rider:

  • Welcome Back Letter from Principal Parman

    August 5, 2021

    Dear Roosevelt families,

I am so excited to welcome students back for the 2021-22 school year!  I know last year was not what any of us expected, and we are still watching COVID-19 numbers closely.  But, it looks like we will be in person this school year!  I am looking forward to seeing familiar faces (with masks on) and meeting more of you in the coming weeks and months.

We will continue to work closely with the school district and county health experts to stay informed about decisions around mask wearing and other public health requirements.  For the beginning of the year, all students and staff will be required to wear masks inside Roosevelt High School.  The health of our students is our number one priority.  This spring and summer, students and staff have done a great job of following all social distancing and mask wearing requirements, and I know our Riders will continue to take care of each other by staying home if they are sick, wearing masks, staying 3 feet apart, and washing their hands.

The entire Roosevelt staff is getting ready for the school year.  We’re excited to welcome new students and families to the Rider Family.  Please review the information below. If you have questions, you can call the Roosevelt High School office at (503) 916-5260.

Best wishes for the rest of your summer.  We’ll see you in a few weeks!

    Sincerely,

    KD Parman, Principal

    Roosevelt High School

    Atentamente,

    KD Parman, directora
