  • Course Offerings 

    English 1-2
    Students examine the major genres through four themes related to personal identity and heroism. Students read a balance of contemporary and classic works—short stories, essays, novels, poetry, dramas, and nonfiction—that encourages them to make inferences and look at the world through archetypal patterns. Students improve their writing, reading, speaking, listening, viewing, and study skills.
     
    English 3-4
    Students develop an appreciation for and understanding of ideas and experiences from around the world. They read a balance of contemporary and classic works—short stories, essays, novels, poetry, nonfiction, drama, and non-print media—that encourages the examination of multiple points of view. Students work to become effective writers, critical thinkers, attentive readers, and engaging presenters. 
     
    English 5-6/College Reading & Writing 115
    Students study rhetoric and writing through a variety of texts, including essays, articles, documentary films, art, and poetry. They consider essential questions such as, “What is a speaker’s purpose?” and “What techniques do creators use to convey that purpose?” Students also engage in self-guided research projects and writing in a variety of modes. Those students who meet the college-level requirements of the course may be able to earn 4 college credits in IRW115 in addition to the high school English/Language Arts credit.
     
    English 7-8/Senior Inquiry
    This is the Senior Inquiry English 7-8 course. Senior Inquiry is a dual-credit, yearlong course offered in partnership between Portland State University and Jefferson High School. Its purpose is to deliver interdisciplinary college-level courses on-site at the high school while preparing students for the unique demands and rewards of college coursework. Senior Inquiry is team-taught by high school teachers and university faculty. Students who complete the class will earn 15 college credits as well as the required high school English, Government, and Economics credits. To be eligible for the Portland State University credits, students will need to show grade level proficiency, productive academic behaviors, as well as a grade of C or higher in the class. Language Arts credit given for English 7-8.
