Hello Jefferson Families and Friends,
Wow, it has been quite a year! There have been many challenges and some unexpected silver linings. Your Jefferson PTSA got busy figuring out new ways to support our students and staff. Here are some highlights from this year:
PTSA meetings go virtual! It is difficult to make connections and build relationships when you can't even be together. But we have made the most of it and have had some super virtual meetings. We have made it a goal to be relevant and engage the Jefferson community by inviting guest speakers to our general meetings that focus on topics important to our families like the school bond measure including modernizing Jefferson, stressors and mental health during the holidays and the planning of The Center for Black Student Excellence (to come in January!).
Senior Celebration may seem like a long way off but our committee is hard at work planning for the kind of recognition and celebration that our seniors deserve. As you may suspect, there are plenty of obstacles that prevent us from doing things the way they have been done in the past but we have lots of great ideas to create a really special celebration for our graduating students.
We are blocked from most of the ways we would normally support our staff and teachers and show them how much we appreciate them and all of their hard work at a time when they probably need it more than ever! That didn't stop us. We just completed a letter writing campaign with notes of appreciation and gratitude mailed to each one of our Jefferson teachers, staff members and administrators. A special thanks to the dozen or so parents and community members that made this happen. And special thanks to Egg Press for donating 80 beautiful cards. We LOVE our Jefferson Staff!
Last but certainly not least, we pivoted our small in-school food pantry when school buildings closed in March to a full food-distribution two times a week that is open to all community members. Not only do we provide pantry staples but fresh produce, diary, meats and plant-based proteins. In addition, we have worked hard to secure basic school supplies, toilet paper, hygiene and period products and more recently, other difficult to acquire items like laundry and dish detergent, face masks, and diapers. We are so grateful to provide this service for our community members. The food pantry has also given us a unique opportunity to get close to each other and care for each other.
On this last day of the year, please consider giving a donation to your Jefferson PTSA so we can continue what we are doing. We normally raise much of our money through concessions at sports events and that opportunity is not available to us during the pandemic.
We recognize that many families are facing hardship right now but if you are not and looking for a way to make a difference, your donation to the Jefferson PTSA goes directly toward efforts to support Jefferson students, families, staff and the community!
We can't thank you enough! Together We Can!
Have a happy and beautiful new year,
Laura Bullock, PTSA President
and your Jefferson PTSA Board
