Cleveland continued its run atop Portland Interscholastic League wrestling, using its depth and titles in two weight classes to win league’s district tournament for the ninth year in a row. The Warriors piled up 324.5 points at Marshall High School to outdistance runner-up Grant by 93.

Cleveland got individual titles from freshman Logan Medford, who won the 126-pound championship match by pinfall in 34 seconds, and junior Patrick Brown, who won the 138 title with a pin at 1:06. They were joined by 18 other Cleveland wrestlers who scored points by finishing in the top eight of their weight classes.

The Warriors’ depth overcame standout individual performances from Grant, which won four individual titles, with freshman Kai Tsugawa winning at 132, senior Cormac O’Hagan at 182, sophomore Simon Porter at 195 and senior Jordan Reed at 285.

Jefferson won three weight classes: junior Anthony Branch at 106, freshman Khtrelle Preston at 113 and senior Michael Preston at 160. Wilson had two individual winners in freshman Gus Johnson at 120 and senior Jack Walker at 152.

The other champions were Franklin senior MIcky Marchello at 145, Madison senior Everett Chiles at 170 and Roosevelt junior Joshua Larrabee at 220.

The tournament also served as a qualifier for the Class 6A state tournament, with the top three finishers in each weight class advancing, and fourth-place finishers placed in a pool for potential spots. The state tournament will be held Feb. 28-29 at Memorial Coliseum.

The state event also will include a full girls championship bracket. PIL wrestlers competed in the state qualifier earlier this month in Cottage Grove. Lincoln junior Sophie Keefer was runner-up at 125, and Franklin senior Dore Young finished second at 235. They and other top-four finishers will compete at state.

Swimming: Grant and Lincoln waged tight team competitions at the PIL district championships at the Dishman Community Center, with Grant winning the girls championship by 18 points, and Lincoln taking the team title by 10 points.

The Grant girls were led by sophomore Quinn Brown, who won the 200- and 500-yard freestyle titles and swam a leg on the Generals’ winning 200 and 400 freestyle relay teams. Grant won six of the 11 races.

Two sophomores won two races in the girls meet: Jefferson’s Hazel Derr in the 100 freestyle and 100 backstroke, and Lincoln’s Katherine Adams in the 200 individual medley and 100 breaststroke.

In the boys meet, senior Peter Hinnen won two races (100 butterfly and 100 breaststroke) and swam on the winning 200 medley relay team to lead Lincoln. Cleveland senior Cody Soo won the 200 and 100 freestyle, and Wilson senior Isaac Anderson won the 200 individual medley and 100 backstroke.

The winners of each race qualified for the Class 6A state championship that will be held Friday and Saturday at the Tualatin Hills Aquatic Center in Beaverton. Other district finalists who met qualifying times also will compete at state.

Golf event to raise money for PIL: Registration is underway for one of the main fund-raising efforts for the PIL. The seventh annual PIL Open Golf Scramble will be held on Wednesday, June 10 at the Reserve Vineyards and Golf Club in Aloha.

Those who would like to participate have multiple ways to do so, from buying a $35 ticket for the post-tournament dinner and auction, to a title sponsorship opportunity for $10,000. In Portland Public Schools, one in three students in grades 6-12 participates in PIL athletics. In the past five years, participation in PIL sports has grown from 5,500 students to 13,000, increasing the need for resources.
