    Dear PPS Community,

I am aware that many of our families and students are fearful in this current political environment and that those fears were elevated by the president’s recent executive order. In light of this latest action, we must all be sensitive and supportive to those in our community who feel this uncertainty, especially those from our immigrant and Muslim communities.

I want to you assure you that Portland Public Schools remains committed to creating a safe and inclusive environment for all of our students, staff and families — and this is a core value that we will not abandon.

Let us stand together and reaffirm that Portland Public Schools is a place that welcomes all, celebrates diversity, and is a safe place for every student, family and staff that walks through our doors.

The PPS Board of Education directed staff to clarify the district’s procedures relating to U.S. Immigration & Customs Enforcement (ICE) activity in PPS schools and that work is concluding. Staff will present to the Board next month and districtwide staff trainings will ensure our policies and practices align with our commitment to care for the emotional and physical well being of all of our students in our schools. We will also provide this information to families.

Thank you for your contributions in creating a strong and inclusive community that supports all of our students,

    Bob McKean
    Superintendent
