Barry grew up in SW Portland and received all of his formal education at Oregon schools. He attended West Sylvan, Lincoln HS and Willamette University School of Law. He is a graduate of Oregon Episcopal School, Portland State University (Political Science) and Lewis and Clark College (MAT). Before teaching, Barry spent more than four years in each of the following fields: merchant marines (tugboats), reconnaissance (USMC), neurobehavioral research (OHSU), and home restoration.

In addition to teaching, Barry has served PPS as a mentor teacher, Dean of Students, intern administrator and varsity tennis coach. He has taught math to students in grades 6 through 12 and his favorite classes are Geometry and Advanced Algebra. He lives in SW Portland and can be seen outside the classroom dining in Multnomah Village, paddle-boarding the Willamette River, and volunteering for the Oregon chapter of Citizens’ Climate Lobby.
