Degrees and Certifications:
Jay Rishel grew up in Northeast Ohio. He was drawn to teaching through his work at the Thurber House, a literacy center in Columbus, Ohio, and a service learning course at Ohio State. After earning an undergraduate degree and graduate degree in English from Ohio State University, he moved to Portland with his wife Piage, raising two daughters, Nora and Eva. Rishel came from Wilsonville to teach at Ida B Wells. He is currently teaching AP English and sophomore English, and rides his bike ten miles every commute to Ida B. Wells High School. Rischel also loves rock climbing and working out in his garage. He wakes up at 4:30, meditates, takes a sip of coffee, and is extremely productive in the morning. Jay is passionate about language and literature, and supporting the academic and cognitive ability of his students at Ida. B Wells High School, as well as the growth in his students. Switching from the COVID pandemic was a big switch from a different day flow, to another day flow with his line of work. He resides in NW Portland.
