    2018-19 International Youth Leadership Conference
    Friday, February 22, 2019

    8:00 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.
    Portland State University
    825 SW Broadway,
    Portland, OR 97201

Conference presenters are asked to prepare highly engaging, culturally competent workshops appropriate for our Emergent Bilinguals (students of English as a Second Language).  Presenters are asked to consider one of three priority topics:

    • Leadership and Communication
    • College and Career
    • Culture and community

We also welcome presentations related to intercultural communication, community activism, teamwork and self-esteem.

    Conference Mission
The conference is an opportunity for students to learn and network with fellow students, educators and community leaders in the Portland area.

    Conference Curriculum
The conference curriculum consists presentations focusing on Leadership/Communication, College/Career, and Community/Culture presented through a general session followed by 2 topical workshops and a college/career fair, as well as a Master Class Presentation for the entire conference.

Workshops are formatted as 70 minute sessions.

The approximately 350 PPS Emergent Bilinguals (EBs) in attendance at the Conference will represent over 90 different spoken languages.  Students will range from 9 – 12 grade. English ability will vary among all grades.  EBs are highly motivated to participate and learn, but can occasionally be reluctant to share and open up in unfamiliar environments.  Presenters are asked to prepare workshops that contain visual or multimedia elements that can engage English speakers at any level. Click here for a guide to engaging English Language Learners.

Students will begin arriving at the PSU campus 7:30 a.m. and register in the lobby before congregating in the Ballroom for the General Assembly at 8 a.m.  Following the Keynote, students will break into groups for two consecutive workshops in various classrooms in both Smith and Cramer Halls. A tabling session with College and Career recruiters will take place at that same time, as well campus tours provided by PSU. Students will return to the Ballroom for Lunch from 12:30 a.m. till 1:10 p.m. after which everyone will participate in a Master Class for the conference.   Following a short break, students will enjoy a talent show featurning many of their colleagues, a Closing Presentation and Cultural Celebration. At close, students will return to their high schools by yellow bus.

Workshop facilitators are asked to prepare and bring any necessary handouts, visual aids, computers or audio/visual equipment needed for their workshops.
