April 17 - Portland premiere 'Climate Justice & the Thin Green Line'
J Haaken Productions, a Portland-based documentary team, invites the community to the Portland theatrical premiere of their latest documentary, Necessity: Climate Justice & The Thin Green Line. The screening will be followed by a Q&A discussion with the director and participants featured in the film at 3:00 PM on Sunday April 17, 2022 at the historic Hollywood Theatre in Portland. Tickets are available via the Hollywood Theatre Website and more information about the project at the Necessity website and on social media @necessitythemovie. The trailer is also available on Vimeo.
The Necessity Series is a two-part documentary directed by Jan Haaken, filmmaker and professor emeritus of psychology at Portland State University and Samantha Praus, researcher and filmmaker. Each film tells a story of everyday people and their fights to save the planet.
After feedback from festivals, classroom and community screenings, and in consultations with our partners, the Necessity team began filming Part II which is set in the Pacific Northwest. Much like Part I, Necessity: Climate Justice & the Thin Green Line is guided by Native perspectives and weaves into the film dramatic regional sites where people are fighting fossil fuels. The film continues the story of activists enlisting the necessity defense, this time in a precedent-setting jury trial in Oregon after a direct action at Zenith Energy in Portland. This story of climate resistance in the Pacific Northwest brings into view a historical landscape of tribal leaders, Indigenous activists and white allies as they resist oil trains and terminals in the transport of highly toxic products through critical waterways and treaty lands. In following the path of oil-by-rail and oil resistance along the Columbia, the film revisits lessons of the New Deal and what climate activists take from that era in thinking about a Green New Deal.
