    PPS Letter

    On March 1, 2022, the Portland Public Schools Board of Education passed a sweeping and ambitious climate policy that will direct district climate action around emissions reductions, climate education, and climate justice for the next three decades. This policy came into being as a result of years of dedicated advocacy from students, teachers, and community members.

    PPS Climate Response Poicy

    The policy, known as the "PPS Climate Crisis Response, Climate Justice, and Sustainable Practices Policy," (CCRP) directs the district to accomplish 3 primary objectives:

       -- Reduce environmental impacts;
       -- Improve health and wellness;
       -- Teach climate change, sustainability, and climate justice.

    This policy has become the guiding document for PPS climate change and climate justice work. It requires buy-in and action from all walks of PPS: from superintendent-level leadership to kindergarten classrooms, from teachers to community partners, from central office administrators to powerful high school climate activists.

CCRP 2023 Annual Report

Since March 2022, when the Policy was passed, the district has designed and initiated a number of programs to push forward specific policy goals while coordinating efforts to design a long-term implementation plan that prioritizes equity, carbon reduction, cost, and efficiency.

The progress from the last year, including challenges, successes, and next steps are all outlined in the 2023 CCRP Annual Report, which was presented to the PPS School Board on June 13, 2023.

CCRC: How PPS is staying accountable to these goals

The Climate Crisis Response Committee (CCRC) advises the PPS Board of Education on implementation of the Climate Crisis Response, Climate Justice and Sustainable Practices Policy. As the CCRC reviews the Policy, they will discuss and determine specific avenues for arriving at stated policy goals. The CCRC will meet quarterly, provide insight and feedback for the District in setting goals and milestones, and engage with public comment about opportunities and challenges related to the Policy. CCRC Members bring expertise and diverse perspectives on sustainability and climate justice in Portland, and all have connections to Portland Public Schools, as students, parents, or alumni.

At the end of the last school year, the CCRC submitted their first official annual report to the PPS Board. You can read it here

Check out the committee's full page, where you can find a list of current members, upcoming meeting schedule, past meeting notes and recordings, and calls for open positions.

CCRP Dashboard

A critical part of any policy work is to be able to know where we have succeeded and where we need more work. Since the passage of the Climate Crisis Response Policy, a major part of our work has been to collect data to figure out where we are starting from and where we are going. Data will allow us to set measurable goals and gauge our progress toward them. PPS is working to develop a public-facing climate action dashboard. This dashboard will be used to highlight activities and progress towards the Climate Crisis Response Policy.
