    Our Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) department may be reached via (503) 916-2000, ext 63502. 

    EHS staff provide professional consultation to administrators, teachers, students and building staff on issues relating to environmental health, occupational safety, hazardous materials and safety committees. Our goal is to provide and maintain educational environments of the highest standards for the students and staff of Portland Public Schools.

  • DOOR PROPPING CLARIFICATION

    Below is the determination of whether door propping is allowed, or not:

    Standard Q was an agreement from the 1990s between PPS and PFB. This allowed PPS buildings to be partially upgraded for improved egress corridors. The schools that required Standard Q upgrades are allowed to prop doors open with a gallon jug filled with sand. Wood or other door wedges are not allowed at any site. The Standard Q Schools are listed here

    At all other sites, no doors can be propped open in any way, unless propped open by a magnetic hold open tied into the fire alarm system. When the alarm sounds, the hold open is released and the door will close and latch.
