Dual Language Immersion Programs
Portland Public Schools currently offers Dual Language Immersion programs in five languages: Chinese, Japanese, Russian, Spanish and Vietnamese.
The Dual Language Department is proposing to add Arabic immersion in Fall 2018. With support from the Qatar Foundation International, PPS is working to add a kindergarten classroom for the 2018-2019 school year, tentatively on the west side of the city. To express your interest and receive more information about this proposed program, please submit the online form. Depending on interest, we will run a lottery to select participants.
During this planning phase, in addition to translating curriculum, the department is also reaching out to community partners such as Portland State University, Lewis & Clark College, and community organizations to create a Collaborative Design team that will guide the implementation of the program.
Arabic will join Spanish, Chinese, Japanese, Russian and Vietnamese Dual Language Immersion programming that aims to close the opportunity gap for emerging bilingual children while serving all children in becoming bilingual and biliterate.
Additionally PPS is expanding current programming with Chinese DLI at Harrison Park located in the center of the Jade District and is working to transition Rigler Elementary to an all school Spanish DLI program.
