AHERA Compliant Asbestos Management Program
Since the passage of the Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA) in 1988, Portland Public Schools has completed more than 3,000 asbestos-related projects. In 2014 we created the Environmental Coordinator position whose primary role is to manage the PPS asbestos program. The result is a new focus and energy toward safety and proactive management of asbestos containing materials.
The AHERA compliance program is managed by Environmental Health & Safety. The Asbestos Management Plans, located in EHS and in the main office of each site, provide detailed information about locations, conditions, projects, etc., related to each site in the District, as required by AHERA. This information is recorded in a central database. Reports are inserted periodically in the notebooks at each school.
Also new in 2014 was a web based asbestos database system. The system will save time and paper, increase access by schools and parents and improve reporting capabilities. Please click here, or in the sidebar to access your school's Asbestos Management Plan.
Annual Asbestos Notification
Each year, as a requirement of the federally mandated Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA), the District must notify the community of the existence and location of the Asbestos Management Plan (AMP).
