Jey Buno is an accomplished educational leader in the Portland area. He will be the Interim Chief of Student Support Services starting July 1. Jey succeeds Brenda Martinek, who retired at the end of the school year.
Jey has served for the last year as the Senior Director of Special Education here in Portland Public Schools. Jey transitioned to PPS in the 2021-22 school year from Evergreen Public Schools in Vancouver, where he served since 2000, including six years as Executive Director of Special Services and Federal Programs. In that role, Jey supervised elementary principals, health services, counseling and social emotional learning, the special education department and all federal programs. He is a skilled collaborator and team player, and expert in the implementation of inclusive practices.
Throughout this past year, Jey has led the special education department toward establishing systems and structures for implementation of inclusionary practices for students with disabilities in Portland Public Schools. This included aligning the special education department with the central office, a specific focus on collaborative relationships with building leaders and special education staff, reestablished parent and staff advisory teams, and assessing the needs of the special education program across the district throughout this year through establishing a partnership with the Urban Special Education Collaborative. Jey will continue to lead implementation of our new strategic work around inclusionary practices for students. Jey holds an Educational Specialist Degree in School Psychology, a Master of Education in Counseling and Human Services, and has a K-12 Building
