    With the passage of the May 2017 Health and Safety Bond, just over 1.1 million dollars became available to mitigate radon levels in Portland Public Schools. Several radon projects were started prior to the May 2017 bond using emergency funding from the district. Over the last several months crews have made significant progress in mitigating radon from problem sites across the district. Click here to learn more at the PPS Risk Management Radon Page

  • Completed radon mitigation projects

    Lent:

    Permanent radon mitigation systems were constructed and are operating in the main building and the music building.

    Meek:

    Permanent radon mitigation systems were constructed and are operating in the cafeteria and for rooms 103 and 107.

    Skyline:

    A permanent radon mitigation system was installed in room 105A. Final completion has been achieved and the final report is available here.

    Jefferson:

    A permanent radon mitigation system was installed to mitigate rooms A36 and A75 (room numbers on original blueprints). Final completion has been achieved and the final report is available here.

    Additional testing will occur every 5 years

    All regularly occupied ground level rooms at these schools will be re-tested every five years in accordance with Oregon Health Authority protocols.

  • Radon mitigation work in progress

    Ockley Green:

    Final design radon mitigation systems have been installed and final reports are expected soon. The mitigation systems are for the gym, PE office (room 307), and the principal’s office. System has been tested and meets radon level requirements. Final inspection pending.

    Peninsula:

    A temporary radon mitigation system was installed in the boiler room and the design was proven to be effective. Construction of the permanent mitigation system is complete. System has been tested and meets radon level requirements. Final inspection pending.

    Beaumont:

    Long-term testing determined Beaumont will require a mitigation system to lower radon levels in the gym/26A. Construction of the permanent mitigation system is complete. System has been tested and meets radon level requirements. Final inspection pending.

    Vernon:

    Long-term testing determined Vernon will require a mitigation system to lower radon levels in the kitchen. Construction of the permanent mitigation system is complete. System test is tentatively scheduled through 3/20/18.

    Kelly:

    The design system for radon mitigation in the cafeteria and custodial closet was proven to be effective. Construction of the permanent mitigation system is complete. System has been tested and meets radon level requirements.  Final inspection pending. A mitigation system from early 2000s is also in place at Kelly.

    Lane:

    The design system for radon mitigation in Room 126 was proven to be effective. Construction of the permanent mitigation system is complete. System has been tested and meets radon level requirements.  Final inspection pending.

    Marysville:

    The design system for radon mitigation in Rooms 137, 138, and 139 was proven to be effective. Construction of the permanent mitigation system has been paused to address asbestos in the path of installation.

    Roseway Heights:

    The design system for radon mitigation in the Boiler Room was proven to be effective. Construction of the permanent mitigation system is complete. System has been tested and meets radon level requirements.  Final inspection pending.

    Wilcox:

    The design system for radon mitigation in the Boiler room, Room 16, and Conference Room 1 was proven to be effective. Construction of the permanent mitigation system has been paused to address asbestos in the path of installation.

    Edwards:

    The mitigation system for room 6D has been contracted. Installation expected in late March 2018.

    Cesar Chavez:

    Testing determined Cesar Chavez would require a radon mitigation system in Room 19. However, radon mitigation is on hold because construction is underway to add an elevator to the school due to protocol requirement to re-test all occupied ground floor rooms after a significant construction project. (FYI The elevator is scheduled to be complete by the end of this month)
