    PPS radon mitigation work

With the passage of the May 2017 bond, just over 1.1 million dollars became available to mitigate radon levels in Portland Public Schools. Radon testing has now been completed every school and radon mitigation systems have been successfully installed at 16 schools. The migation efforts are now complete and the program is significantly under budget.

Additional testing occurs at least every 5 years
Oregon law requires testing every 10 years however PPS chooses to test every 5 year following the Oregon Health Authority guidelines. Every school year, a handful of District schools are re-tested before the 5 year limit is up. Results are posted on the PPS Healthy and Safe Schools web page. Anytime radon is detected above the action level after all protocol testing, a mitigation provider is contracted.

  • Radon mitigation work in progress

    Marysville:
The design system for radon mitigation in Rooms 137, 138, and 139 was proven to be effective. Construction of the permanent mitigation system was paused to address asbestos in the path of installation. During this time, the test radon mitigation system was in place and operating. Asbestos abatement in this area is now complete, and permanent radon mitigation is scheduled for completion in the fall of 2019.

    Cesar Chavez:
Testing determined Cesar Chavez would require a radon mitigation system in Room 19. However, radon mitigation was put on hold temporily to allow the construction of the elevator to be completed. This was necessary to fulfill a requirement to re-test all occupied ground floor rooms after a significant construction project has occurred. Retesting determined that radon mitigation was needed in rooms 19, 152, 163 and 164. The design system for mitigation in these rooms was installed during the summer of 2019 and was proven to be effective. Formal design for the permanent system is now underway. Construction is expected to be complete by the end of 2019. In the meantime the test radon mitigation system is in place and will continue to operate until the permanent system is installed and tested.
