The purpose of this website is to provide information that will support and assist Substitute Educators in PPS. The main resources provide information for day-to-day subsituting with PPS as well as provide information on Frequently Asked Questions, Substitute Educator Resources, Site Report, Substitute Labor Agreement, and License Renewal.
Substitute Educators are valued members of the Portland Public Schools community who play an integral role in supporting the students and school communities of Portland Public Schools every day. Working as a Substitute Educator with Portland Public Schools requires a high level of flexibility and adaptability, as Substitute Educators are eligible to work throughout the district in any school, any subject, and any grade level. Substitute Educators work a flexible schedule on an as-needed basis, and have the ability to assign themselves to jobs via the Absence Management system.
Portland Public Schools has a competitive hiring process for our Substitute Educator pool. In order to be considered for a Substitute Educator position, you must hold an active Oregon Teaching License issued from TSPC or the ability to obtain one, and you must submit your application to the current Substitute Educator job posting. - Daily Rate of Pay: $224.05 for a full day of work or $112.03 for a half day of work.
- Extended Rate: when working 10+ days in an assignment, substitute educators will be eligible for extended rate of daily pay of $250.50 for full days and $125.25 for half days.
- Incentive Schools: if a substitute educator works at one of the 21 identified schools, they will receive an additional $15 for a full day or $10 for a half day on top of their daily (or extended) rate of pay. More information can be found here.
- Retention Bonus: when a substitute educator works in excess of a minimum number of days in a pay period, they will receive a bonus equivalent to one additional day of pay. If a substitute educator works all available days in a pay period, they will receive a bonus equivalent to three additional days of pay. More information can be found here.
We are currently accepting applications for the 2022-2023 School Year. Interviews will be by invitation only beginning in late July/early August 2022.
